Newfoundland Recipes Cod au Gratin Figgy Duff Lassy Bread Jigs Dinner Pea Soup & Doughboys Pan Fried Cod Tongues
Peasoup & Doughboys Soaking Time:6-8 hours Cooking Time: 2.5 - 3 hours 8-10 servings Ingredients: 2 cups salt beef, diced (or a ham bone) 2 cups yellow split peas 1 cup onions, chopped 1 turnip, diced 1 carrot, diced ½ cup celery, chopped 2-3 potatoes, cut in chunks salt and pepper to taste Doughboy Ingredients: 1 ½ cups flour, all-purpose 1 tablespoon baking powder ½ teaspoon salt ¾ cup water or milk STEP 1: Soak salt beef and peas separately in water overnight (Skip for ham bone). STEP 2: Drain meat and place in large saucepan. Add 8 cups of cold water; bring to a boil.  Simmer 30 minutes. STEP 3: Add drained peas and chopped onion.  Simmer for about 1 ½ - 2 hours.  Add more water if desired. Step 4: Add other vegetables and cook until tender Doughboys: STEP 1: Combine flour, baking powder and salt.  Gradually stir in enough liquid to for soft dough. STEP 2: Drop mixture by tablespoonful into hot soup; cover tightly and simmer, without removing the cover, for 15 minutes. Hope you enjoy this traditional Newfoundland dish.
